The Spathiphyllum originates from Central and South America. This green gem belongs to the Araceae family. The plant is generally also known as ‘Peace Lily’, but this name usually refers to smaller varieties of Spathiphyllum.
Characteristics
The Spathiphyllum is known for its impressive size. It is the largest of the Spathiphyllum species and can grow up to 1.5 meters high. The leaves are glossy, dark green and elongated in shape. The contrast between the radiant white of the flower – which surrounds the central ‘spadix’ like a ‘spathe’ – and the deep green leaves, adds to the visual appeal of this species.
Care
The Spathiphyllum prefers a location with indirect light and is not tolerant of direct sunlight. It requires regular watering and the soil must be kept moist, but not waterlogged. During the growing season, which typically includes spring and summer, this plant needs regular feeding with a standard indoor plants fertiliser. For optimal growth and blooming, a constant humidity is also beneficial.
